Butch isn't evil like Landa, but I don't like him and I think he lacks the magnetism that makes me enjoy seeing him on screen in spite of that. But he's an extremely compelling character and tons of fun to watch. He is an evil man and a participant in genocide. To clarify what I mean: I do not 'like' Hans Landa. He seems like a shitty boyfriend and doesn't have the 'cool' factor or great dialogue that makes a character you might not otherwise like compelling to watch. I think the reason for that is there's a section in the middle where I find that I don't care all that much.Butch just isn't that likable for me. My respect for it is top-tier btw, and I do enjoy it, but it's never been quite as fun for me as some of his other movies. But I think at the end of the day I respect it more than I enjoy watching it. I totally get why people say Pulp Fiction is Taratino's best film. I think it’s an extremely well executed story, but it’s nearly three hours of nastiness with a pretty bleak ending (much like one of its major influences, The Thing, another brilliant film that is not everyone’s cup of tea) as much as I love it, I fully understand why plenty of people don’t care for it. This is a story of violent and, more importantly, unrepentant killers. A woman throws a bit of sass his way and he breaks her nose without batting an eye. I mean of the titular eight the most decent is probably John Ruth and he puts himself through a hell of a lot of extra work because he enjoys seeing people hang. I don’t think The Hateful Eight really has that character-which is not a fault of the movie, just a creative decision that plenty of people are not going to love. I want Jackie Brown, The Bride, The Basterds, Django, etc., to accomplish their goals more or less from the get go. In most of Tarantino’s movies, I think it’s safe to say that there are one or more protagonists that we want to see succeed. I remember walking out of the theater thinking that the movie wouldn’t be that popular, in part because I was asking myself ‘was there a character in that movie with a redeeming quality?’ There’s plenty of humor but it never has the atmosphere of fun or playfulness of something like Kill Bill or (parts of) Django. That said, The Hateful Eight is a very appropriately titled film and I think it’s easily the nastiest of Tarantino’s movies. The acting, dialogue, pacing, tension, cinematography, score, etc., are all very well done imo it’s an extremely well made film. I loved The Hateful Eight, I think it’s one of Tarantino’s very best.
